My name is Robert Harper, I’m a senior visual communication student and I registered for Online Design because I needed another 3-credit hours this semester. I chose Online Design specifically because it’s becoming more and more prevalent in people’s everyday interaction which necessarily means designers in the field are becoming more and more sought after. I’ve built simple HTML web pages in high school but feeling more at home as a designer, I have since avoided anything code-related and instead honed my aesthetic problem-solving skills. I hope to break through that personal code stigma with this class so that my skill set does not become a limiting factor of my creativity as a designer and artist later in life.

I would like in 5 years time to be working for myself on projects that I find to be worthwhile or interesting. I am a fan of William Blake’s artistic virtuosity in the fields of poetry, painting, and printmaking (especially the way in which he fused these many disciplines to create art) and I look to him as a model and source of inspiration. In my free time I try to exercise my creative drive by exploring mediums dissimilar to my current field of graphic design such as writing or music. I believe that understanding the specifics and differences of multiple artistic mediums allows me to understand them and my career field of graphic design more completely and in a greater context.
